Sean Covey "The 7 Habits of Happy Kids"
Dinner table (or driving) discussion: Ask your children if they know what the word "procrastinate' means. From there, tell them about a time when you left a project or studying for a test until the night before. Ask them if they have ever done the same and then ask them how it made them feel. Discuss the idea that preparing for work ahead of time or doing work a little bit each night will help lower stress and increase our chances of a successful outcome. In our house, we don't have many assignments to worry about just yet. So to teach the concept of 'work first, then play' I use a timer to set aside a 'train your brain' time. This "train your brain" involves working on basic skills even if there is no assignment at the end. The timer is set for 20mins and my kiddos can choose the activity that they want to work on. A "train your brain" session happens before TV time or play dates. It is our hope that this reinforces the idea that you get your work done before you play. Comments are closed.
