For Friday's PD, Teachers had the opportunity to listen to a very motivational speaker. Some of you might remember him from a band from the 90s. David Usher is now an author and sought after public speaker. His topic...."Creativity". My big take away from his speaking engagement was that creativity requires structure and freedom. At first thought those two concepts seem like conflicting ideas....but when thinking about my classroom I can see the relevance. Our routines (greeting the teacher at the door, our morning cheer, 'around the world' and our class oath to name a few) help the students understand what is expected of them. Opportunities for creativity can flow, when you are given the freedom to explore ideas within a predictable, safe and caring environment. I'm looking forward to reading more about how to continue to foster creativity in my classroom. I bought the book, got the autograph and the photo. :) Once a Superfan, always a Superfan. lol Note: a very fun connection. At the end of his speech, David Usher was asked about any strategies that he uses to build his confidence and to be successful. He quoted the social psychologist Amy Cuddy's famous Ted Talk. The fun connection for me was that I had literally just shown the class the Ted Talk the day before. In class on Thursday, your kiddos watched our 2nd Ted Talk for the purpose of creating little leaders. I strongly encourage you to watch it! |
